Slut-shaming…. why do so many think men can, but women cant?

Slut-shaming – It’s a horrible phrase isn’t it? Well, it’s a horrible thing to do, so why not have an equally gross name for it? Slut-shaming is making someone (Usually women) feel bad for having sexual experiences that are deemed outside of society’s expectations.

Had sex with too many men for someone’s liking? Slut.

Enjoy sex without feeling ashamed? Slut.

Happy to have one night stands? Slut.

The list is exhausting and apparently, anybody can make the rules as to what gets you on the list. It doesn’t even have to do with sex and a woman’s virginity, it can come down to something as simple as what you wear or don’t wear. Men just do not have the same problems as women when it comes to being shamed or criticized for their sexual acts or looks. If a man engages in the same behaviour as a woman who is slut-shamed, he is often lauded for his exploits as a ‘stud’.

To take back the word and show this backward attitude for what it is, a large number of women take part in ‘Slutwalks’. They are designed to bring attention to the victim-blaming culture and the shaming of sexual assault victims as well as the more mainstream slut-shaming women endure. The first Slutwalk began after rallies in 2011 in Toronto, Canada after a police officer was caught saying that as a precautionary measure to being sexually assaulted, “women should avoid dressing like sluts”. During the rallies, women often dress in provocative and revealing clothing and march with signs and banners to draw attention to their messages. As time has gone on and more Slutwalks have been set up, the attendees have seen more male supporters in their ranks which can only be a good thing.

American socialite Amber Rose has brought a lot of media attention to her own annual ‘Amber Rose SlutWalk Festival’ which had plenty of celebrity attendees such as Nikki Minaj and Blac Chyna and has helped to raise awareness of the cause. The aim is to make a woman’s sexual side, not a Taboo subject but something to celebrate and not shame them for. Also to enhance the simple fact that what a woman does sexually or not and what she wears or does not wear has no impact on their worth nor does it mean that they should be assaulted for it in any way and that includes not just physical but the vocal implication that they are a Slut and that it’s a bad thing!
